Innovation Commons Survey

OK, we're getting better, but I still need your wisdom. Still only 10 out of 77 people have completed this 15 minute survey. In order for me to use the data I think I need at least 35.

Also, check out the new audio blog about the concept of an innovation commons. You can download it here. (22:20 minutes, 21.4 mb, mp3). If the file is too large for you, you can order a CD here.

Values Survey Final Round
An innovation commons is a space (physical or virtual) that enables innovation through the mutual and interdependent creativity of its members. It has the following characteristics:

  • Open system (bounded)
  • Everyone contributes
  • Everyone can use the results
  • Members who don't contribute are excluded
  • Fluid & flexible
  • An abundant resource system

Other names that people have used to describe this type of system are open source, open innovation, democratic innovation, inclusive innovation, peer to peer (P2P), smart mobs and free agent collaboration. I think that the innovation commons concept, whatever it ends up being named, is one of the most important developments in how people work together.

Some attempts at creating an innovation commons have been successful, but most have failed. Why? What are principles of a successful innovation commons?

The goal of the Innovation Commons Network project is to shed some light on the factors that would make an innovation commons successful.

One of the tools that we are using is values. The values of a group are basic priorities. Decisions and actions are guided by the values, among other things. If we understand the values of a successful innovation commons, we will have in essence, the organizational equivalent of DNA. We will understand to a large degree its future behavior.

We are in the second round of a survey to determine the key values for a successful innovation commons. We began with 125 values. The first survey narrowed the number down to 22. The purpose of this survey is to use your wisdom and judgement to select seven key values that will become the genetic structure of a highly successful innovation commons.

Values alone will not guarantee a successful innovation commons. In mathematical terms, they are necessary but not sufficient. We still have to understand principles, structure and methods of implementation.

To complete the survey online, click here. There you will be instructed to select 3 means values and 4 goals values. If you would like to study the values offline before completing the online survey, click here for a PDF file describing the values.

If you would prefer to take the survey with a document, click here. This is a Word document. You can either mark the Word document on your computer and e-mail it back to me, or you may print it out, mark it by hand and fax it back to me at 512.459.4067.

If you would like to see the results of the survey todate, click here.

Innovation Commons Value Survey Web Conference
The Innovation Commons Values Survey Web Conference was held last month. You may listen to the conference and view the slides by going to:

http://www.callinfo.com/archives/playback.jsp?id=k3s37843 (1 hour)

You may also download a copy of the presentation at:

http://www.theinnovationroadmap.com/InnovationCommonsValuesSurvey.pdf

Or, a copy of the description of the 22 values selected through the first round of the survey:

http://www.theinnovationroadmap.com/InnovationCommonsValues.pdf

Or, a copy of the topics on the blog:

http://www.theinnovationroadmap.com/BlogTopics.pdf

As a result of the conversation during the conference, I can see the need for a forum as well. So I have set that up. You will be getting an invitation to join from Yahoo. I urge you to join and to create a Yahoo profile for yourself, if you don't already have one. You can ask questions of the group easily. And, if you have something to share, you can do that easily as well without having to learn how to use the blog. It is a restricted forum. So, you have to be a member of the network to join, post e-mails or comment. However, it is unmonitored, so everything you write will go to everyone else. Keep the e-mails on the subject of the innovation commons.

Ground Rules
There are very few ground rules for participation. We trust that if you take away something from this experience that you will give back at least as much as you take. No solicitation or promotion is permitted. Be nice. Be honest.
